TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) Dysfunction is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic pain of the muscles of mastication (the muscles that move your jaw).
The TMJ is the joint that connects your jaw (mandible) to the side of your skull. When it works well, it enables you to talk, chew and yawn.
For people with TMJ dysfunction, problems with the joint and muscles around it may cause stiff jaw muscles, pain that travels through your face, jaw and/or neck, limited movement or locking of your jaw, painful popping or clicking in your jaw.
Also it may cause a change in the way your upper and lower teeth fit together.
Treatment for TMJ Dysfunction may include simple things you can do yourself, such as eating softer foods or applying ice packs, or more specialized treatments, including manual therapy and Intramuscular Stimulation or acupuncture.
Your Physiotherapist will give you home exercises as well.
